Timberwolves select Georgia guard Anthony Edwards with No. 1 pick

The Timberwolves have selected Georgia guard Anthony Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The selection was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Wolves were on the phone discussing potential trade scenarios right down to the wire, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Ever since Minnesota won the lottery in August, there was a belief that the team preferred to trade down and pick up extra assets, but it seems as if a favorable deal never materialized.

In Edwards, the Wolves will add a shooting guard to a core that features big man Karl-Anthony Towns and point guard D’Angelo Russell.

In his first and only college season, Edwards averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists on .402/.2.94/.772 shooting in 32 games (33.0 minutes) for the Bulldogs.

Top NBA draft prospect Anthony Edwards says he would prefer to be drafted in NFL

By Erin Walsh | Last updated 11/18/20

Top NBA draft prospect Anthony Edwards may have hurt his draft stock, or he simply may not want to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who own the first-overall selection in this year’s event. Whatever the case may be, his latest comments ahead of Wednesday’s draft are cause for concern.

Edwards, who could be selected as high as first overall, said earlier this week that he would prefer to be drafted by the NFL because he can have more fun on the field than he can on the court.

What’s more concerning, though, was his comments about basketball. Edwards claims to love the sport, but he doesn’t seem dedicated to it, which isn’t a good sign for any NBA franchise looking to bring him in.

“I’m still not really into it,” Edwards said, according to ESPN’s Alex Scarborough. “I love basketball, yeah. It’s what I do.”

Despite his comments, Justin Holland, who has been Edwards’ trainer for a long time, insisted his client loves basketball and that he does want to be the first-overall pick, per Scarborough.

Anthony Edwards declaring for 2020 NBA Draft

Freshman Georgia guard and potential top pick Anthony Edwards is entering the 2020 NBA draft class, he tells Evan Daniels of 247Sports. Edwards – who has signed with Octagon agent Omar Wilkes for representation, according to Daniels – said that he believes he should be the No. 1 selection this year.

“I think I should go number one, no doubt,” Edwards told 247Sports. “That’s the only place I think I should go.”

While it remains to be seen whether the NBA team that gets the No. 1 pick will agree with Edwards’ assessment, the 6’5″ guard is widely viewed by draft experts as the top player on the board. Edwards currently ranks first on ESPN’s big board, and topped the most recent mock draft published by Sam Vecenie of The Athletic.

“I think he has to be a realistic option for No. 1,” an NBA scout told Daniels. “He has size and strength for position with ability to make shots and create for others. He’s shown glimpses defensively and can impact both sides of the ball. The potential is there to be a future superstar.”
