Who Will Compete With the Dodgers to Sign Zack Greinke?

Written by Joe Messineo at No Coast Bias

After opting out of his contract, Zack Greinke is a free agent. That means that the Los Angeles Dodgers could be in danger of losing half of the one-two pitching punch that has made them World Series contenders for the past few years. The Dodgers will no doubt make a major push to keep Greinke, but if you believe the rumors, there’s a chance that Greinke will walk away. He’s unhappy with the team right now, some observers claim, especially as concerns the Dodgers’ lack of discipline with controversial young outfielder Yasiel Puig.

But for the Dodgers to lose out on Greinke, perhaps the most coveted free agent pitcher on the market, they’d have to be outbid by another team. Which franchises could swoop in and snatch away Greinke? Here are our top picks.

Boston has the money to sign whoever they’d like, and while Ben Cherington got fired for handing out too many big contracts, we’re not convinced that the Red Sox have really left their free-spending ways behind them. They’ve made it clear that they’ll be chasing an ace this offseason, and we expect them to commit as much money as necessary to make that happen. That makes them candidates to go for the top guys: Greinke, Johnny Cueto, and David Price. Price may be the best fit, but Greinke is very much on the radar. Other teams besides the Red Sox want Price, so the Sox will explore all of their other options – especially if Price comes off the table early.
