UFC Fight Frequency – Crunching the Numbers

Written by Rick Snavely at MMA Manifesto

In a previous article, we looked at whether women in the UFC were getting fewer fights than the men.  After tallying the number of fights that have been booked for each weight class this year, we saw that the women in the UFC actually are getting fewer fights than the men.

However, that conclusion is a bit misleading.  It turns out that the total number of fights that are put on for each weight class is proportional to the number of fighters in that weight class.  So, even though women in the UFC are fighting less often than the men, the women are actually getting their fair share of fights because they represent the smallest portion of the UFC’s roster.

Besides that finding, there were some other trends that I noticed while looking at the numbers.  Here are a few quick notes I made:

  • The UFC was eight events into 2015 before they had one strawweight fight (Joanna vs. Carla Esparza at UFC 185).
  • The men’s bantamweight division has not been as active as it should be. Six months into 2015, the men’s bantamweight division had only been booked for seven fights – the least out of any division.
