Overall, this has been an enormously disappointing season for the Giants, who hoped to return to the postseason and are instead one of the worst teams in baseball. They went into Wednesday night’s game with the Rockies (GameTracker) with a hideous 54-87 record.
The Giants, who have pretty much nothing to lose at this point, brought back fan favorite Pablo Sandoval a few weeks ago after he was released by the Red Sox. San Francisco needed help at the hot corner and Sandoval was basically free — Boston is on the hook for his salary — so why not?
Kung Fu Panda’s second tour of duty with the Giants is not going well at all. Sandoval struck out looking as a pinch-hitter Wednesday night, and he is now hitless in his last 38 at-bats. That’s the longest such streak by the Giants player since the club moved to the Bay Area in 1958.

The previous San Francisco record for futility was 37 at-bats by Johnnie LeMaster in 1984. The major-league record for consecutive hitless at-bats by a non-pitcher is 46 by Eugenio Velez.
It’s unclear how much more rope the Giants will give Sandoval. There’s a little more than three weeks to go in the regular season and the Giants could give those third base at-bats to a younger player like Ryder Jones or Kelby Tomlinson. For now, they’re going to roll with Sandoval, and he is stuck in a long hitless streak.
