Top Five Vezina Trophy Candidates Thus Far

Written by Hunter Hodies at The Sports Quotient

We are more then a quarter of a way through the NHL season and some goaltenders have been playing out of their minds this year. Here’s a look at the top five candidates for the trophy for the best goaltender in the league.

5. Roberto Luongo: Despite being 36 years of age, Roberto Luongo has been one of the best players on the Panthers this season and is one of the biggest reasons why the Panthers are in the playoff picture. His record of 10-10-5 may not look so good, but he has a better than average save percentage of .923. His GAA (goals against average) is 2.36, which isn’t bad either for him. He may not be one of the finalists for the trophy this season, but he’s certainly going to finish in the top five of the voting if he continues his stellar play.

4. Braden Holtby: It seems as if last year was not a fluke for Braden Holtby, as the Washington Capitals’ netminder has been just as good this year. He is currently tied with Devin Dubnyk for the most wins of any goaltender in the league, and his GAA is among one of the league’s best at 1.91. His save percentage is .928, a top mark that could get even better as the season progresses. There’s no doubt that Holtby has a very high chance of being a Vezina finalist at the end of the year since his play doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The Capitals could be a very dangerous team in the playoffs if he’s on top of his game.
