In case you haven’t already heard, Sidney Crosby isn’t playing too well. Everyone around the NHL has noticed his recent struggles and has raced to presumptuous conclusions. While Crosby has dealt with scrutiny throughout his entire career, he has never faced this amount of negative attention.
As a highly touted prospect and #1 overall draft pick, Crosby entered the league facing lofty expectations and he almost always rose to the occasion. During his rookie season, Crosby scored 102 points, and since 2005-06, he has scored 100+ points in four additional seasons.
Crosby quickly became the face of the NHL, a decorated player, and a venerable captain. He is a two-time winner of three prestigious awards: the Art Ross Trophy (leading scorer), Hart Memorial Trophy (NHL MVP), and Mark MessierLeadership Award.
At age 28, Crosby has amassed 864 points (305 goals, 559 assists) in 647 games. He ranks third in Penguins history in points behind Mario Lemieux and Jaromír Jágr – pretty good company for Crosby, a future Hall of Famer.
