Seahawks Sign Dwight Freeney

The Seattle Seahawks are in real need of more help at edge rusher at the moment with defensive end Cliff Avril on injured reserve and Michael Bennett dealing with a foot injury. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, one such option the Seahawks would turn to is veteran free agent Dwight Freeney, who met with the team on Tuesday.

Freeney, 37, was in Seattle on Tuesday to work out and take a physical for the Seahawks. He later tweeted he’d joined the team. Schefter reports the deal is for one year.

The talented defensive player had been on three different teams over the last four years after spending his first 11 seasons in the NFL starring with the Indianapolis Colts.

Freeney spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, recording 3.0 sacks in 15 games and helping them to a Super Bowl berth. He had 8.0 sacks in just 11 games the previous year with the Arizona Cardinals. His 122.5 career sacks rank 18th all-time and second among active players behind Julius Peppers.

With Avril going down with a neck injury and Bennett also ailing, Dwight Freeney is certainly a welcome addition to the Seahawks’ options at defensive end. In fact, both his on the field play and off the field leadership could do wonders for the team this season.

The team already signed former fifth-round pick Quinton Jefferson, whom they had waived prior to the season, and also promoted Branden Jackson from the practice squad to compensate for Avril’s absence. Frank Clark and Marcus Smith have also been playing significantly more snaps over the last few games.
