As National Signing Day inches closer, plenty of attention will be paid to the 5-star and 4-star recruits. But here are some 3-star sleepers to keep in mind as the recruiting cycle winds down.
Everyone wants to know where this 5-star recruit will sign or whether or not that 4-star prospect will flip. But too often people forget that recruiting rankings are quite flawed, and a ton of lower-rated recruits go on to have successful careers.
Guys like J.J. Watt, Antonio Brown, Jordy Nelson, Joe Staley, Alex Mack, DeMarcus Ware were all underrated, and that list goes on ad infinitum.
So while everyone wants to have a top-10 recruiting class, we need to pay attention to some names capable of having big impacts at their respective schools and beyond. Here are a some 3-star sleepers as National Signing Day approaches.
3-Star RB Malik Davis – Florida
Davis is an extremely patient runner. That’s the first thing that jumps off the tape. He won’t put himself in tough situations, instead he reads blocks well and is quick through the hole. Davis doesn’t have the top-end speed you want, but he can accelerate and pick up chunks of yardage. He’s extremely well balanced when he runs, sees the field well and rarely ever goes down on initial contact.
3-Star ILB K.J. Britt – Auburn
Britt diagnoses plays very quickly and swarms to the ball, annihilating ball carriers on impact. He sheds blocks easily and isn’t a liability in coverage. Able to deliver big hits at key moments, Britt will be a great fit for Auburn.
3-Star QB Cade Weldon – Miami
He has more athleticism than one would think, and can extend plays with his legs. Mostly, though, Weldon has a great feel of the pocket. He delivers frozen ropes and can put it where only his guy will get it. There’s also a nice touch on the deep ball. He’ll have some competition with N’Kosi Perry also headed to Coral Gables, but Weldon can shine under the tutelage of Mark Richt.
