Jordy Nelson Injury Update; At Least Two Broken Ribs

The Green Bay Packers are not ruling out wide receiver Jordy Nelson for Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff game at Dallas.

Of course, coach Mike McCarthy also isn’t saying whether his star wideout suffered any sort of internal injuries when he absorbed a crushing sideline hit in Sunday’s NFC wild card playoff victory over the New York Giants at Lambeau Field, saying only Nelson suffered a “rib injury” and that he “spent the evening” in a local hospital. And it’s possible McCarthy is merely trying to keep the Cowboys guessing on Nelson’s availability.

McCarthy would only say Nelson, who finished the regular season with 97 receptions for 1,257 yards and an NFL-leading 14 touchdowns, will not practice on Wednesday or Thursday and will have to take part in Saturday’s practice before the team leaves for Dallas in order to play against the Cowboys.

“Talking with the medical staff, he’s going to be in the rehab group through Friday. And then Saturday, if he can practice, then he may have a chance,” McCarthy said Monday afternoon. “But we’re not going to do anything until Saturday. I’ll probably know more about where Jordy stands come Friday.”

Nelson did not come through the locker room during the period open to reporters on Monday, but wide receiver Jeff Janis said he did see Nelson at the facility earlier in the day. The NFL Network reported Monday evening that Nelson suffered “at least” two broken ribs.

Asked if Nelson suffered any internal injuries — in last year’s season-ending playoff loss at Arizona, wide receiver Randall Cobb sustained a punctured lung and spent the night in a Phoenix-area hospital — McCarthy wouldn’t say.

“That’s for the players to discuss the specifics of their injuries,” McCarthy said. “He’s here today and he was here earlier getting treatment. He’s going to be in part of the rehab group, and we’ll go through Friday and we’ll have a better handle on where he is. If he doesn’t practice Saturday, then he won’t play in the game.”
