John Scott had the last laugh(s) at the NHL All Star

If there was any lingering doubt that the NHL All-Star Game Sunday was better off with John Scott, it was quickly wiped away. Not only did the banished-to-the-AHL player provide many of the event’s most memorable and humorous moments, he acquitted himself well on the ice and proved a darling of Internet observers.

Just to recap: the 33-year-old journeyman enforcer had been voted into the game as something of a goof, which offended the NHL so much that it went to great lengths to keep him away from the showcase game in Nashville. Scott found himself suddenly traded from the Coyotes to the Canadiens, who immediately sent him to the St. John’s (Newfoundland) IceCaps of the AHL. After an outcry from fans — and a Players’ Tribune story in which Scott wrote that an unnamed NHL official pointedly asked him, “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?” — the league relented and allowed him to participate in the all-star game.

So, of course, Scott went out and scored the first goal for his Pacific side. Then he scored another, as the crowd at Bridgestone Arena went nuts.
