HS Football Player Declares to His Own High School

Written by Sam Spiegelman at SEC Country.com

For about one hour, most of SEC Country continually refreshed its Twitter feeds in the hopes of seeing where the nation’s No. 7 safety decided to commit.

Turns out, it was just a prank.

Todd Harris, the 4-star safety from Plaquemine (La.) High School, set up a mock commitment ceremony in his gym on Sunday evening. He even had three hats — LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss — on hand to set the scene. With Twitter devoting 100-percent attention and a small crowd accrued at the school, Harris reminded everyone that sometimes recruits can have a little fun, too.

The elite defensive back wound up placing a Plaquemine hat on and revealing his home football jersey. “I’m committed to Plaquemine,” he announced on the night before summer camp got underway.

“It was my idea,” Harris’ high school coach, Paul Distefano, told SEC Country on Sunday night. “You know, we’re starting off camp, and I just wanted everyone to buy in.”

Harris made that point overwhelming clear.

There was a reason why so many people were tuned in for Harris’ faux announcement. Plaquemine is located about 15 minutes outside of Baton Rouge and about 90 minutes away from New Orleans.

Earlier this month, Harris told SEC Country he had narrowed his top schools down to three after attending multiple camps. He named LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama as his final three schools after finally procuring the offer from the defending national champions during their camp on July 20. He also revealed that he plans on finalizing a decision before the start of his senior year.

LSU fans were anxious because the in-state Tigers have remained a constant force through the entirety of Harris’ recruitment. Alabama fans who are now following Harris after earning the offer were also happy, as safety remains a major need for the Tide’s 2017 class.
