Fixing Madrid

Real Madrid are not the best team in Europe. This season, they would be lucky to be considered part of the top two teams, given how great Barcelona and Bayern have looked this season.

For most teams, being the third best in Europe would be considered a top season, but for Madrid, it is a disappointment. Madridistas and team president Florentino Perez expect better, and to not be the top European team is a letdown.

Since winning La Decima, it is hard to say if Real Madrid has faltered or if its competitors have simply improved, but both Bayern and Barcelona have surpassed Madrid. These two teams provide the blueprint for how Real Madrid can improve moving forward.

Madrid’s problems spread from the field all the way up to the boardroom, largely due to Perez’s infamous Galactico transfer policy. Whereas most teams look to improve their weaknesses, Perez has frequently looked to sign the biggest name possible and does not always consider how the players fit into the team.
