Don’t Blame Calvin Johnson for Wanting to Retire Early

Rumours started swirling on Sunday evening that 30-year-old Calvin Johnson had told the Detroit Lions that he was planning on retiring at the end of the season, according to ESPN:

“Detroit Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson told his family and a close circle of friends before the past season that 2015-16 would be his final season in the NFL. He delivered the same message to coach Jim Caldwell the day after the regular season ended … Out of respect to Caldwell, Johnson agreed to do just that.”

These are, of course, just rumours, and even if they’re true it’s always subject to change. It’s short list of professional athletes who  coast  into retirement gracefully. But should Megatron decide to retire, would you really blame him?

Just think of the trajectory Johnson’s career: Johnson was picked second in the draft overall in 2007 by a Lions team who went 3-13 the season before and has endured as its superstar through sheer misery.
