Breaking down the reported USWNT coaching shortlist

U.S. Soccer may be closing in on the next U.S. women’s national team head coach.

A report from The Athletic says that the federation has narrowed down its list of the next US women’s national team head coach. The list consists of three names: Australia manager Tony Gustavsson, OL Reign head coach Laura Harvey, and Juventus boss Joe Montemurro. It could be possible that other names are on the list, however the pool of options with the kind of big-time experience in women’s soccer that the USWNT requires are very small.

The search for Vlatko Andonovski’s successor has lasted for nearly three months, with Twila Kilgore managing the team through friendlies in September and October. U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said in September that the federation would like to hire a new USWNT manager by December, giving the new boss a little over seven months to prepare for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
