The Green Bay Packers stepped onto an unseasonably hot Lambeau Field and sweated out a tough and oftentimes sloppy victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in overtime on Sunday. The win pushed Green Bay to 2-1 on the season and featured all of the usual Packers dramatics.
Let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of Week 3:
The Good
- Josh Jones: The Packers rookie safety and linebacker not only showed he belonged, but he was one of the biggest factors in the Packers’ victory. After starting out a bit sloppily (he was lost on an early Giovani Bernard touchdown), Jones finished with a team-high 12 tackles, two sacks (both on third down), and three tackles for a loss, plus the punt-forcing stop in overtime. It’s early, but Green Bay might have found the type of player they haven’t had in the secondary for some time.
- Geronimo Allison: The second-year wideout continued to show that he has what it takes to be a playmaker in the league. Allison didn’t shine much in the first half, but he came alive in the second, finishing with six catches for 122 yards, including a 72-yard catch in overtime to put the Packers in easy field goal territory. Allison was also a major factor during the Packers’ game-tying drive, converting a 3rd-and-9 pass on the sideline and showing the team they could trust him when the lights are their brightest. The young receiver has definitely made “the leap” that the Packers talk about. Mike McCarthy called him a “damn good football player.”
