The NFL head coaching carousel has narrowed down to two. Here’s a look at the latest movements around the league:
Atlanta Falcons:
- Hired: Raheem Morris as head coach (fired Arthur Smith)
Carolina Panthers:
- Hired: Dave Canales as head coach (fired Frank Reich)
Los Angeles Chargers:
- Hired: Jim Harbaugh (fired Brandon Staley)
Las Vegas Raiders:
- Hired: Antonio Pierce (fired Josh McDaniels)
New England Patriots:
- Hired: Jerod Mayo as head coach (parted ways with Bill Belichick)
- Remaining Openings: Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator
Tennessee Titans:
- Hired: Brian Callahan (fired Mike Vrabel)
Current teams still searching for a head coach:
- Washington Commanders: Head Coach (fired Ron Rivera)
- Seattle Seahawks: Head Coach (Pete Carroll retired)
Notes:
- Washington Commanders have been conducting a head coaching search that began in early January. NFL Teams can now conduct in-person interviews with coaches, and Washington has a comprehensive list of candidates. They had online interviews with Ravens Associate HC/DL Coach Anthony Weaver and DC Mike Macdonald before Peters was hired. The Washington Commanders also interviewed their OC, Eric Bieniemy, along with Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Lions OC Ben Johnson, and Texans OC Bobby Slowik last week. Teams can conduct in-person interviews this week for coaches no longer in the playoffs. Washington will have to wait until after Sunday’s Conference Championship games to get second interviews with Lions OC Ben Johnson, Lions DC Aaron Glenn, Ravens DC Mike Macdonald, and Ravens Assoc. HC/DL Coach Anthony Weaver. Washington is planning to meet with Johnson and Glenn Monday. Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik had his first in-person interview with the Washington Commanders this week. Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn will reportedly be the first candidate to get a third interview with the team. He had a virtual interview, and an in-person interview, and now gets a second interview with the head coaching search committee.
- Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was in the Seattle area for an in-person interview Thursday with general manager John Schneider and the Seahawks. Quinn was Seattle’s defensive coordinator for the team’s 2013 and ‘14 Super Bowl teams, in the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” heyday. It was the second time in a week the Seahawks and Quinn talked in the team’s coaching search to replace Pete Carroll. Seattle fired Quinn’s former boss Jan. 10. Quinn is one of the five candidates the Seahawks scheduled this week for second interviews. The others: Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The Falcons hired Morris to be Atlanta’s new coach Thursday. That was hours after Carolina chose to hire former Seahawks assistant Dave Canales as the Panthers’ new head coach, per multiple reports. Canales left Carroll’s staff in Seattle following the 2022 season to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator this past season.
- Will Bill Belichick land one of the two available head coaching jobs? We should know soon, but if not, he could try his hand at coaching lacrosse. Along with football, Belichick played lacrosse in both high school and college. All three of his kids — two of whom are currently on the Patriots’ coaching staff — played lacrosse collegiately and of course, Belichick coached former Penn State lacrosse great Chris Hogan in New England for three seasons.
