Art Briles To Apologize on Gameday

You’re going to want to tune into ESPN’s College GameDay this Saturday.

Art Briles will sit down with Tom Rinaldi in his first television interview since he was fired as Baylor’s head coach in May following an investigation into how the University mishandled sexual assault allegations against students, including several football players.

ESPN announced that the interview will air in its entirety during GameDay.

From the interview:

“I made mistakes. I did wrong, but I’m not doing this trying to make myself feel better for apologizing,” Briles told ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “I understand I made some mistakes. There was some bad things that went on under my watch. I was the captain of this ship. The captain of the ship goes down with it.

“So, I understand that I made some mistakes, and for that I’m sorry. But I’m not trying to plead for people’s sympathy. I’m just stating that, ‘Hey, I made some mistakes. I was wrong. I’m sorry. I’m gonna learn. I’m gonna do better.”

The investigation into Baylor, conducted by Philadelphia law firm Pepper Hamilton, found issues with the football program, claiming, “there are significant concerns about the tone and culture within Baylor’s football program as it relates to accountability for all forms of student-athlete misconduct.”

In addition to Briles’ dismissal, the Pepper Hamilton review led to Kenneth Starr’s removal as University president and chancellor, and athletic director Ian McCaw’s resignation.

Former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has taken over No. 19 Baylor on an interim coaching basis. The Bears beat Northwestern State last week 55-7.

Briles has visited several college and NFL teams over the summerand has been adamant that he will be coaching in 2017.
