Ole Miss Loses Ken Webster for Season

Ole Miss couldn’t have asked for a better start to its opener against Florida State Monday night

The Rebels’ offense scored in a minute and 14 seconds to stake themselves out to an early lead. The solid beginning turned a bit sour when Ole Miss took the field on defense though.

Junior cornerback Ken Webster provided some quality coverage on a deep pass from Florida State, but landed awkwardly on his left leg and immediately went down in pain.

Rebels athletic trainers came to check on Webster, and he was eventually taken off the field on a medical cart. He could be seen agonizing in pain on ESPN’s broadcast. Webster was officially designated with a left knee injury.

Webster’s teammates came to the cart to meet with him before he was driven off.

“Ken, he’s had an incredible offseason,” cornerbacks coach Jason Jones said during training camp. “He’s worked his tail off all spring, all summer, in the weight room. You can see it in practice, the plays that he’s making.”

Senior Carlos Davis slid into Webster’s spot at corner.

Running back Eric Swinney was also injured during the game, leaving the team painfully thin at the position if Swinney is out for any extended period of time.

“I haven’t heard the final (diagnosis) but neither one looked good,” coach Hugh Freeze said.

Freshmen play

Oxford native and freshman receiver D.K. Metcalf made an impact early when he fought off Florida State corner Tavarus McFadden for a touchdown reception in the second quarter. Star recruit A.J. Brown started his first college game, playing as an outside receiver in a five-wide set. Brown, who is from Starkville, was not the only one. Safety Myles Hartsfield also started as a true freshman, and defensive tackle Benito Jones, cornerback Jaylon Jones and offensive tackle Greg Little all played.
