Kris Bryant Had Himself a Game Yesterday

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is no stranger to making history, and on Thursday he continued that tradition as he did something that no player in baseball history has ever done.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Bryant became the first player under the age of 25 to have three games in a single season in which he hit two home runs and racked up four total hits.

Bryant accomplished that feat thanks to his massive performance on Thursday, when he clobbered two home runs and drove in five RBI in a 9-6 Cubs victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The home runs give Bryant 30 on the season, which is tied for the National League lead with Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies. The Cubs will play the Rockies in a three-game series beginning on Friday night at Coors Field, giving two of the best young third basemen in baseball the opportunity to go head-to-head.

Bryant’s history making afternoon wasn’t limited to just one historic feat, either. According to ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, Bryant is just the second player in MLB history to record multiple five-hit, five-RBI games in the same season.

Cubs legend Phil Cavarretta is the other player to achieve the feat, doing so during his MVP campaign in 1945 (which is also the last season that the Cubs reached the World Series).

Bryant’s 30 home runs this season also land him in elite company. According to Christopher Kamka of CSN Chicago, in the history of the Cubs, only four other players have hit 30 or more home runs in a season before they turned 25, and Bryant became the fifth on Thursday.

Anthony Rizzo was the last to accomplish the feat, doing so in 2014, and Ernie Banks (1955), Ron Santo (1964), and Sammy Sosa (1993) are the only other three members of the club.
