Marlins Will Consider Signing Alex Rodriguez

Just as the Yankees slammed the door in Alex Rodriguez’s face, another one has opened for the steroid-tainted slugger.

Amid the news that Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton will likely miss the remainder of the season because of a severe groin strain, Miami president of baseball operations Michael Hill told reporters Sunday that the team will look into signing A-Rod to try and fill the void.

“We’re putting together our list of options. He’s an available player,” Hill said of Rodriguez. “So he’ll be on that list, and we’ll see where it goes.”

The Yankees released Rodriguez, a Miami native, on Saturday after he played his final game in pinstripes at the Stadium Friday night. A-Rod was supposed to move into a special advisor role with the Bombers after he officially retired, but it appears the Marlins will attempt to pry Rodriguez away from that opportunity in the Bronx.

“We’re going to look at everything,” Hill said. “There has been information out there about his situation. I have no idea what his interest level is to continue playing. He has something set up to move into the Yankees front office; I don’t know where his head is on that.”

After a win over the White Sox on Sunday, the Marlins are tied for the N.L.’s second wild card spot with the Cardinals. Clearly, they’re in contention to make the playoffs for the first time since 2003, when the beat the Yankees in the World Series.

While replacing Stanton’s production will be nearly impossible — despite a slow start, the 6-6 outfielder boasts 25 homers and 70 RBI in 103 games — the Marlins must do something.

Enter, Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez.

“This team has played too well for too long,” Hill said. “We’re right in the thick of this thing, and we’re going to do everything in our power to help in any way we can. If it’s him, if it’s someone else, we’re going to try to find a way to make it happen.”
