Denard Robinson Spoke On July 3rd Car Car Crash

Jaguars running back Denard Robinson spoke to reporters on Thursday for the first time since his single-car accident on July 3 when he drove his Chevrolet Impala into a Southside retention pond.

Robinson fell asleep at the wheel.

“I feel blessed, because it could have been a situation where I wasn’t talking to you right now,” Robinson said. “The situation could’ve been way worse. I could’ve hurt somebody or killed somebody, so I’m truly blessed that nothing happened to nobody. I came out with no scratches and my passenger was the same way.”

The responding officers helped Robinson and his passenger, Marissa Staples, out of the car after having trouble waking them both up as the car was partially submerged.

“I feel asleep at the light,” Robinson said. “I was at the light sitting there waiting and I ended up dozing off. It was late at night and I had a busy day. It was one of those days where I should’ve just stayed in.”

Robinson said he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“If that was the case, I would’ve had a DUI,” Robinson said.

Robinson was not cited for the accident initially, but on July 10 the Sheriff’s Office cited him for careless driving.

A friend picked Robinson and Staples up after the officers cleared them to leave the scene.

“They questioned me,” Robinson said. “They did a lot of that. I talked to them. They did their job. At first, it was like ‘Whoa’. But, I had to get myself together and tell them what was going on.”

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley both defended Robinson’s character this week as the Jaguars began reporting for training camp. Robinson said he appreciated their support.
