Von Miller’s Deadline, Will He Sign a New Deal?

Update: Von Miller has signed the offer from the Broncos, and will be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL.

By four o’clock today, all NFL Players who’ve signed a Franchise Tag, will be forced to play the season on that tag. The biggest name on the current list of Franchised players is undoubtably SuperBowl MVP, Von Miller. Miller and the Denver Broncos have been at arms ever since the SuperBowl ended and hopefully, the two sides can reach a deal by the 4:00 o’clock deadline. Why? Because the Denver Broncos just offered him one of the largest defensive contracts of all time.

The Broncos offered Miller, $70 million guaranteed, with the contract as a whole valued at $114.5 million. If Miller chooses to sign this deal, he will become the highest guaranteed money offered to a non-quarterback in the history of the NFL. It would also make Miller the highest-paid player in Broncos history. Additionally, it would also make Miller’s contract the second highest, in terms of guaranteed money, in the NFL today.

First reported by Adam Schefter at ESPN, a source close to the two sides expressed his optimism that a deal would get done by the deadline, and executives from other teams within the league have said that Miller would have to take such a deal.

The two sides have no talks on Thursday, but are expect to meet this morning, as the frame work of the deal was laid down back in June.

This deal comes off of the heels of Andrew Luck’s massive contract extension that included $87 million dollars in guaranteed money, an NFL record as well as Fletcher Cox’s deal with Philadelphia, which allowed him to be paid  $63.3 million dollars guaranteed. If Miller signs the deal, then he will replace Cox as the highest paid non-QB player in the league.

Of course, nothing is final yet, and it’s very possible that the signing does not occur until minutes before the deadline. We’ll keep you posted on what occurs between the two sides.
