The Phoenix Suns will possibly be in the market for a new head coach after this miserable season ends. So why not go after the coach with the most recent men’s basketball title under his belt?
Fresh off NCAA title, Villanova’s Jay Wright has emerged as the top choice of the Phoenix Suns to become their head coach, per NBA sources.
Regardless to Suns outcome, interim coach Earl Watson has gained strong respect from players. Two said consensus is players want him to stay
Watson has led the injury-battered Suns to a 6-23 record since taking over, a worse winning percentage (.207) than Hornacek’s this season (14-35, .286). Phoenix has lost seven straight and eight of nine. Earlier this week, Watson said there have been “minimal” conversations between him and the team about removing the interim tag from his title.
As for Wright, a cross-country move to one of the league’s sorriest franchises — even one that has a bit of talent in Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight and Devin Booker — immediately after leading Villanova to the national title would be fairly surprising. For one, there’s the small matter of the Wildcats probably being quite good again next year. And if he truly wanted an NBA job, wouldn’t Wright — a Philadelphia area native who has been in and around the city for most of his life — wait until the 76ers’ job inevitably opens? Wright was reportedly a candidate for that job back in 2009, after he led Villanova to the Final Four.
