After four years as the featured back in the Washington Redskins’ offense, Alfred Morris has signed with one of the team’s top rivals.
Morris, the fifth all-time leading rusher in Redskins history, signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, his agent Sean Stellato said. Financial terms weren’t immediately available.
In eight career games against the Cowboys, Morris rushed for 710 yards and seven touchdowns on 152 carries, averaging 4.67 yards per attempt.
“You know what, good for him,” general manager Scot McCloughan said on Tuesday at the NFL annual meeting. “He’s got a home. I wish it was outside the division but that’s ok. We made a decision in-house, and it is what it is. He’s a good football player, he’s a really good person. He’s had a good career but the way the NFL works is you’re always trying to get better. You’re always trying to bring in younger [players] and that’s part of the process. You know what, I hope he does a nice job except against us twice a year.”
Morris closed out the 2015 season with a 19-carry, 100-yard game against Dallas, his second 100-yard game of the season. Morris had a trying season while splitting carries with rookie Matt Jones.
A sixth-round pick out of Florida Atlantic in 2012, Morris burst onto the scene as a rookie as he and Robert Griffin III led Washington to the NFC East title. Morris put up career numbers with 335 carries and 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns. He topped the thousand-yard mark in each of the next two seasons as well, although his averages declined slightly.
In 2015, Morris saw some of his carries go to Jones — a third-round pick out of Florida. Morris, who describes himself as a rhythm runner, who gets better as the games progress, finished the year with 202 carries for 751 yards while averaging just 3.7 yards per carry (down from the 4.1 he posted in 2014, 4.6 yards per carry of 2013 and 4.8 average of 2012).
