Osweiler leaves Denver for Houston

Brock Osweiler shirked the Denver Broncos on the first day of NFL free agency and signed a four-year, $72 million dollar contract to play for the Houston Texans. Two years and $37 million of that contract are guaranteed.

It’s a great deal of money, and I’ll say before I even begin: Good for Osweiler. If someone is willing to pay him $72 million to throw a football, go and get yours, man. I will never fault anyone for taking a deal.

For the Texans, however, I have a question: How do you know Osweiler is any good?

Osweiler has started seven games as an NFL quarterback,. He went 5-2 in those games, which is good, but he was also playing on a team with an historically great defense, which helps matters.

And I know this seems silly, but I promise you it isn’t: He looks the part. Osweiler is 6-foot-6 and can throw the ball a mile, and he’s a good looking guy and I’m sure NFL experts will say that speaks to his confidence, or something. He played for a good team and won most his games, and he’s never been shown to be terrible in any of them. Plus his name: Brock Osweiler. Take that name in. If I were writing a bad script for an NFL movie, my antagonist would be named Brock Osweiler.

But ignore the looks. Ignore the height and the arm strength. Look at his numbers in those seven games, games that, again, he was filling in on a Super Bowl-caliber roster. He completed 61% of his passes, threw 10 touchdowns and six interceptions, averaged 245 yards a game and a hair over 11 yards per completion, and had a QB rating of 86.0.
