Kirk Cousins’s Latest Reddit AMA and What We Learned

Written by Des Bieler at WashingtonPost.com

The Kirk Cousins Provides Offseason Sports Blog Fodder Tour continued Thursday. After making appearances in London and San Francisco this week, the Redskins quarterback turned up on Reddit for another AMA (“Ask Me Anything”), following one in October.

The big takeaway from Thursday’s Internet Q&A was his answer to this question: “Redskins as a team name, racist or nah?”

“Tough question. I guess the way I see it, it’s my job to win football games,” Cousins wrote. “It’s my job to control what I can control. It’s my job to stay in my lane and do the best I can to be a quarterback who can win in this league. And that’s hard enough for me to do already.

“And then there are other people who are paid very good salaries who have to make those tougher decisions at the top, and I let them stay in their lane and make those decisions. I don’t tell them what logo should be on the helmet, or how our jerseys should look, or what color our pants should be that game. I just put on the pants they give me and go play. I would say the same is true of the other teammates.”

One could interpret that initial response (“Tough question”) as indicating that Cousins is himself struggling with this issue. However, it’s more likely that the quarterback was indicating that he didn’t want to shy away from the question, but also didn’t want to say anything remotely controversial in either direction.

Elsewhere, Cousins repeatedly mentioned that the questions he was getting from Reddit users were superior to ones he gets from the “DC Media.” Oh, and on the all-important question of whether a hot dog can be classified as a sandwich (“I’m shocked that the rest of the world has never asked me that question in 27 years of life”), the quarterback said it can, on the logic that “it’s between two pieces of bread,” although he noted, “I’m more liberal than most in the sandwich framework.”
