Bastian Schweinsteiger Comes To America

Major League Soccer looks to have landed another foreign, former star. Manchester United’s 32-year-old German midfield Bastian Schweinsteiger, a World Cup and Champions League winner, is joining the Chicago Fire, the English club announced.

Schweinsteiger, who won eight Bundesliga crowns at Bayern and took home the FA Cup at Manchester United last season, is set to become a designated player signing for the Fire, who are 1-1-1 to start the season.

The midfielder also announced the move on Twitter, leaving a nice message for the fans of the Red Devils.

In his prime he was one of the better midfielders in European soccer, with fantastic passing and as hard a shot as you will see. But he hasn’t been in form for quite a while now, dealing with injury and a lack of being picked in the squad. He joined United in 2015 and played 31 matches that season but wasn’t a big part of Louis van Gaal’s then Red Devils. This season, he has played in just four matches and not once in the Premier League.

His deal, per the Chicago Tribune, is for one year. As for what the Fire can expect — he’s still got some quality but at his age, there isn’t a whole lot left in the tank. He has certainly lost a step but in a league that has seen older players thrive, he could come in and add some quality in the final third and be a real presence in midfield.
