The Next Wave of College Wrestlers in MMA

With UFC 192 right around the corner, it’s time to start talking wrestling. That’s right, I said wrestling. Wrestling has long been one of the biggest staples of the MMA world, and this weekend’s card is filled with loads of wrestlers with resumes longer than Stefan Struve’s arms. While there are many that have some other impressive accolades, five fighters total on the main card have wrestled in Division 1. Below is the list of D1 wrestlers and their alma mater that are throwing down at UFC 192:

 

Daniel Cormier – Oklahoma St.
Johny Hendricks – Oklahoma St.
Tyron Woodley – University of Missouri
Rashad Evans – Michigan St.
Ryan Bader – Arizona St.

 

Each of the people on this list have made a great transition to the MMA game, and that is largely due to their level of wrestling competition. Plus, their wrestling works as well in the cage as it did on the mat. However, the youngest of this batch is Johny Hendricks, who recently turned 32 years old. So, who is in line to take the place of these guys when they walk away? Here’s a list of five guys who are ready to make a splash in the UFC with their wrestling background. Not all of them are D1 guys, but all have some college wrestling experience.
