Notre Dame Football: No need for the Irish to join a conference | isportsweb

Many believe that Notre Dame football should be forced to join a conference in order to make the playoffs, but the CFP committee disagrees.

Conference re-alignment. Money. Notre Dame. It’s a topic that keeps sports writers busy when football isn’t a prime focus. Yet, it’s a good question. In the case of Notre Dame, Caleb Blackmur writes for isportsweb suggesting that the Fighting Irish Independent status is just fine. I’d have to agree. Just like BYU and to a certain extent other Independents, the potential matchups don’t get stale. Rivalries are mostly still intact, but just like the image in his article, watching the Irish play the likes of say OU or Texas, heck even Boise State makes CFB intriguing. Would Notre Dame add credence to viewability and monetary conference payouts, sure, but at what cost to the fun of college football?

“The age-old debate regarding Notre Dame’s legitimacy as an independent team has undoubtedly heated up since the College Football Playoff came into the picture. Many believe that the Fighting Irish should be required to join a conference in order to receive a playoff berth, or in past years to have the privilege of playing in the National Championship. Unfortunately for Notre Dame haters, College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock claims that the committee has indeed not discussed forcing Notre Dame to join a conference.”
