David Ortiz: Time to ‘move on’ from Astros’ sign-stealing scandal

David Ortiz is not about to let the Houston Astros off the hook for the organization’s damning sign-stealing transgressions, but the Boston Red Sox legend nevertheless believes it is time to move on from the scandal.

There unsurprisingly continues to be no shortage of consternationhand-wringing and gnashing of teeth across Major League Baseball and beyond over how the Astros employed technologically sophisticated sign-stealing methods during the 2017 regular season and postseason — as well as the 2018 season — to gain a competitive edge on opponents.

That being said, Ortiz believes little good can come from bemoaning the scandal in perpetuity, although he made it clear that what the Astros did was “without a doubt” wrong.

“You’ve got to move on,” Ortiz told FanSided’s Mark Carman. “[The sign stealing] is a mistake a group of people made, we punished them and it’s time to move on.”

Ortiz also addressed the Astros controversy during an interview this week with Jesse Yomtov of USA TODAY., saying, “Sometimes people cross the line, like what just happened.”

“When you are focused on the winning, winning, winning, sometimes you cross the line doing things that people disagree with,” Ortiz said, “and you personally, at some point, are like, ‘What was I doing?’”
