The rumors have been swirling since the offseason. An extension was expected as soon as last season ended, and we have heard nothing regarding Steven Stamkos’ contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. During training camp, analysts and fans alike determined that opening night was the soft deadline for Stamkos to re-sign with the Bolts. The season began, and no word was given on where contract negotiations were or how close a deal was to being reached.
The longer the negotiations dragged on, the more rumors and predictions were being created out of thin air. Many rumors linked him to returning home and playing for his favorite childhood team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Others tried claiming that a trade between the Bolts and the Calgary Flames were in the works. For what Steve Yzerman claimed to be a number one priority as the General Manager, they sure are taking their time with a highly important contract. So what the heck is happening with Stamkos’ contract?
The reason why it’s taking so long is because it’s highly important. It’s not exactly due to trades being discussed and offers being listened to; this is one of the greatest players in the NHL today in his final contract year, so of course offers are swarming Yzerman every day this season. However, this contract negotiation isn’t as black and white as many people seem to believe. Though it also does not help that they’re keeping the entire process under wraps.
