Before the game began, they learned that their second line center, David Krejci, was unable to play because of an upper body injury. Then, for the third straight game, the B’s were down to five defenseman when Colin Miller took a leg check from Mark Borowiecki. And in the second period, the B’s simply looked lost, unable to muster a single shot on net. In the end, it didn’t matter.
“I’ve used the word resiliency a lot and it’s become a bit of our middle name. I think this group has got a lot of character and it starts with the leadership,” Cassidy said.
Thanks in part to a strong 26-save performance from Tuukka Rask, the B’s shook off all of the above to produce a two-goal third period and their first victory over Ottawa in seven tries.
Brad Marchand scored the game-winner with 2:33 left when, after a dominant shift, he followed up a rebound of a Patrice Bergeron shot and potted it past a helpless Craig Anderson for the lead.
Earlier in the third, Frank Vatrano had broken a personal 16-game goal-less streak to tie the game. And, once the ice was broken against Anderson, it seemed like the B’s could smell victory.
But they needed a little bit of a wakeup call in the second intermission.
